Vensters op de Hemel – Iconen en de Geheimen van Christus

Juni “Van Pinksteren tot Sint Jan”

Week 24 De Nederdaling van de Heilige Geest

Week 25 De Triniteit

Icons from Pentecost to Saint John
At Pentecost, we commemorate the sending of the Holy Spirit, the Helper, or the Spirit of Truth. The Risen Lord sends out His disciples once more “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19). John the Baptist had foretold it: “He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Lk 3:16). To us too resound the words: “You are my Son, the Beloved” (Mk 1:11). The finest wine at the wedding feast of Cana, as the first sign: Jesus bestows life in abundance (Jn 10:10).
week 24 The Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles
After the Ascension of Jesus, the disciples persevered in prayer, together with the women, with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren (Acts 1:14). Jesus had instructed them: “Remain in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49). The day of Pentecost arrives, and suddenly they hear a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind. Tongues as of fire appear, and come to rest upon each of them. All are filled with the Holy Spirit! The people are amazed: “We hear them speaking in our own languages of the mighty works of God.” Jesus had prepared them for His departure: “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have said to you” (Jn 14:26).
week 25 Three Angels visit Abraham and Sarah
At the word of the Lord, Abram set out for the Promised Land. God promised him: “Through your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” (Gen 12:3). One day, the Lord appeared to Abraham; suddenly, three men stood before him. Together with his wife Sarah, he welcomed them with generous hospitality. Then they foretold: “I shall return to you at this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son,” Isaac. When Isaac is older and Abraham prepares to offer him to God, an angel intervenes, and God provides a ram for the sacrifice (Gen 22:13). The invisible circle surrounding the three angels signifies God’s unity and infinity: “I and the Father are one” (Jn 10:30). The chalice upon the altar alludes to the Last Supper: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Lk 22:20).
week 26 Jesus is baptised in the Jordan
John the Baptist dwells in the wilderness of Judea. There, God speaks to him: “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, He is the one who baptises with the Holy Spirit” (Jn 1:33). The people are expectant for the coming of the Messiah, and John calls all to repentance: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” Then Jesus comes to the Jordan to be baptised. John seeks to prevent Him, but Jesus insists: “It is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness” (Mt 3:15). As Jesus is baptised and rises from the water, the heavens open. He sees the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest upon Him. A voice from heaven proclaims: “You are my Son, the Beloved” (Lk 3:22), the Only-Begotten Son (Jn 1:18), who reveals the Father to us.
week 27 Jesus turns water into wine
Jesus and His disciples are invited to a wedding feast. On the third day, the wine runs out. The mother of Jesus is present, and she tells the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus instructs them to fill six large jars with water, each holding about a hundred litres. Then He says: “Now draw some out and take it to the steward.” When the steward tastes the water that has become wine, he exclaims to the bridegroom: “You have kept the good wine until now!” With this first sign, Jesus reveals His glory, and His disciples believe in Him (Jn 2:1–11). Jesus tells the parable of the five wise virgins, who kept their lamps burning with the oil of the Holy Spirit (Mt 25:4). Jesus is the Bridegroom (Jn 3:29), who invites all to His wedding banquet (Lk 14:21).
